What to Do If Your Building Does Not Have a Digital Postcode

You have searched for your address, but no digital postcode appears.

Instead, the postcode application says it found no postcode and that the location has no unit postcode.

This does not necessarily mean there is a problem with your address. Your building may not have been assigned a digital postcode yet.

If this happens, you can request a postcode for the building directly through the postcode application. The process takes you through four steps where you provide your address, building details, optional photographs, and then review your information before submitting the request.

Here is how it works.

Why Your Building May Not Have a Postcode Yet

The digital postcode project is being rolled out across the country, and buildings are being added to the system as they are captured and validated.

Your building may not have a postcode yet because it has not been captured in the system. This can happen with newer buildings, recently developed areas, or buildings not yet included in the mapping process.

If your search shows “No postcode found” and indicates that the location has no unit postcode, you can request one for the building.

First, Search for Your Postcode

Start by searching for your address in the Postcode application.

If your building already has a digital postcode, the application will display it.

If no postcode is available, you will see a message indicating that no postcode was found and that the location has no unit postcode.

The application will then provide a link to Request Postcode.

Tap the link to begin your request.

Step 1: Enter Your Address Details

The first step is the address information form.

Your state and local government area (LGA) will load automatically based on your location.

You then choose how you want to provide the address details. There are two options.

Standard Address

You can provide the standard address details for the building, including:

• House number.
• Street name.
• Landmark.

Description of Building

You can also describe the building using information such as:

• Address.
• Description of the building.
• Name of the owner.
• Landmark.

Choose the option that best describes your building and provide the required information.

When you are satisfied with the details, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Provide Building Details

The second step asks for more information about the building itself.

You will provide details such as:

• Building type.
• Building ownership.
• Building arrangement.
• Building use.
• Notes.

These details help provide more context about the building and the location you are requesting a postcode for. Complete the relevant fields and continue to the next step.

Step 3: Add Photos of the Building

In this step, you can add photographs of the building.

You can provide photographs from different angles, including:

• Gate view.
• Front view.
• Right side view.
• Left side view.
• Back view.

Adding photographs is optional, so you can continue without them.

However, clear photographs can provide additional information about your building and help make its profile more complete. If you can safely take clear photographs of the relevant views, adding them can be useful.

Step 4: Review and Submit Your Request

The final step is to check everything you have entered.

Review your:

• Address details.
• Building information.
• Notes.
• Photographs, if you added any.

Check carefully for mistakes before submitting the request.

If everything is correct, click Submit. NIPOST will then review your request.

What Happens After You Submit?

NIPOST officials will review the information you provided and process your request.

You should receive a response within 24 hours.

If your request is approved, NIPOST can assign your building an official digital postcode.

You Can Request a Postcode for Your Building

A missing digital postcode does not mean you should use a nearby building's postcode or create one yourself.

If the postcode application shows that your location has no unit postcode, use the Request Postcode option to submit the building for review.

Provide accurate address and building information, add photographs if you have them, review your details carefully, and submit your request.
