How to Use Nigeria's Digital Postcode as Proof of Address

You are opening a new bank account, applying for a loan, or registering a business, and the form asks for proof of your residential address. You reach for a utility bill that is three months old and has your landlord's name on it instead of yours. This is something Nigerians are familiar with.

Nigeria's digital postcode system offers a more reliable way to handle this. It helps to first understand the difference between simply having a postcode and holding an official proof of address document, because these are two separate things.

What a Digital Postcode Proves, and What It Does Not

Every building in Nigeria that has been mapped gets its own unique 11-character digital postcode. This postcode identifies the exact building, down to its precise location on the map.

A postcode confirms where a building sits. Linking that building to you personally is a separate layer, and that is exactly what the Proof of Address feature adds.

Why a Standardised Building Reference Matters

Traditional Nigerian addresses can be inconsistent. Two people might describe the same street differently, landmarks change over time, and handwritten addresses on official documents often contain small errors that confuse later.

A digital postcode removes that inconsistency. Because it is tied to one specific building, it gives banks, fintechs, landlords, and other organisations a single, standardised reference to work with instead of a written description that can be interpreted several ways.

What the Proof of Address Feature Does

The Proof of Address feature lets you generate an official certificate that links your identity to a specific postcode. This certificate can then be used anywhere you would normally need to prove where you live or operate a business, including visa and travel applications, account opening and customer verification, loan and credit applications, school admissions and job onboarding, and government and utility services.

Rather than relying on a utility bill or a letter that someone else could easily produce, this certificate ties directly back to a verified building in the national postcode database.

Finding Your Postcode First

If you already know your postcode, you can skip ahead. If you do not, the application gives you two ways to find it.

Search Postcode or Address lets you look up a building by address, postcode, or business name and pull up its postcode from the map. Get Postcode uses your phone's GPS to identify the postcode of the building you are currently standing in or near, which is useful if you know the location but not the postcode itself.

Once you find the right postcode, save it to your account so it is ready to select when you start your Proof of Address request.

What You Need Before You Start

Three things determine how smoothly this goes.

The first is a registered account. The second is identification. You will need one of the following: your National Identification Number (NIN), an international passport, a driver's licence, or your Permanent Voter's Card (PVC).

The third is your postcode. If you have already saved your postcode to the application, you can select it from your saved list during the request. If you have not saved it yet, you will need to complete the request while you are physically at your residence, since the app confirms your postcode using your location at that point.

The certificate costs ₦1,500 per request.

Requesting Your Proof of Address Certificate

Open the postcode application and go to Extras, then select Proof of Address. From there, choose Start a New Request.

Enter your identification details using one of the accepted ID types above. Next, select your postcode, either from your saved list or by completing the request at your residence if it is not yet saved.

Complete the payment of ₦1,500, then review your request before submitting it.

What Happens After Submission

Once you submit your request, it moves into processing. NIPOST, the Nigerian Postal Service, reviews the identification and postcode information you have provided and prepares your certificate accordingly.

This process runs in the background, so you don’t need to keep the application open while you wait.

Getting Your Certificate

You will receive an email notification once your certificate is ready. Open the notification and follow the instructions inside it to access and download your Proof of Address certificate.

Keep the email address linked to your account up to date, since this is where every update on your request will arrive.

Your digital postcode identifies your building. Proof of Address turns that identification into a formal document you can actually use, whether you are opening a bank account or finally putting that outdated utility bill away for good.
